Cusp shaped hydrodynamic instability in a nematic

چکیده
2014 We study the hydrodynamic instability thresholds of a homeotropic nematic subjected to an elliptical shear. We analyse the role of the changes in the symmetry caused by the variation of the ellipticity of the shear around the degenerate circular polarization. Hydrodynamics of polar liquid crystals.
Starting from a microscopic definition of an alignment vector proportional to the polarization, we discuss the hydrodynamics of polar liquid crystals with local C infinity v symmetry. The free energy for polar liquid crystals differs from that of nematic liquid crystals (D infinity h) in that it contains terms violating the n --> -n symmetry. First we show that these Z2-odd terms induce a gener...
متن کاملSwimmers in thin films: from swarming to hydrodynamic instabilities.
We investigate theoretically the collective dynamics of a suspension of low Reynolds number swimmers that are confined to two dimensions by a thin fluid film. Our model swimmer is characterized by internal degrees of freedom which locally exert active stresses on the fluid. We find that hydrodynamic interactions mediated by the film can give rise to spontaneous continuous symmetry breaking (swa...
متن کاملPoisson-bracket approach to the dynamics of bent-core molecules.
We generalize our previous work on the phase stability and hydrodynamic of polar liquid crystals possessing local uniaxial C infinity v symmetry to biaxial systems exhibiting local C2v symmetry. Our work is motivated by the recently discovered examples of thermotropic biaxial nematic liquid crystals comprising bent-core mesogens, whose molecular structure is characterized by a non-polar-body ax...
متن کاملNonstandard electroconvection and flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals.
For many years it has been commonly accepted that electroconvection (EC) as primary instability in nematic liquid crystals for the "classical" planar geometry requires a positive anisotropy of the electric conductivity, sigma(a), and a slightly negative dielectric anisotropy, epsilon(a). This firm belief was supported by many experimental and theoretical studies. Recent experiments, which have ...
متن کاملCross-talk between topological defects in different fields revealed by nematic microfluidics.
Topological defects are singularities in material fields that play a vital role across a range of systems: from cosmic microwave background polarization to superconductors and biological materials. Although topological defects and their mutual interactions have been extensively studied, little is known about the interplay between defects in different fields-especially when they coevolve-within ...
